Artist Spotlight: Tim Scott Bolton

For more than four decades, Tim Scott Bolton has built a career around painting the landscape, travelling widely while remaining deeply connected to the Wiltshire countryside he calls home.

Born in Shropshire in 1947, Tim initially studied Estate Management at London University before becoming a full-time artist in 1984. After several years living in Kenya with his wife, the couple returned to England and bought a farm in Wiltshire, which they continue to run organically.

Travel has played an important role in Tim’s work. His painting journeys have taken him across Africa, India, the Middle East, the United States and Europe, responding directly to the character, atmosphere and changing light of each landscape.

Closer to home, Tim has twice been Artist in Residence at Garsington Opera. His longstanding interest in the English landscape also led him to explore the work of the great 18th-century landscape designer Capability Brown. In 2016, to mark the tercentenary of Brown’s birth, Tim took part in a series of events and wrote the book A Brush With Brown.

His latest travels have taken him to Egypt, where the timeless landscapes of the Nile provide the inspiration for work featured in Summerleaze Gallery’s forthcoming exhibition, Along the Nile: Eight Artists in Egypt.
